KAPTalks: Reproductive Health in a Changing Humanitarian Climate

Donderdag 21 februari 2019 van 17:00 — 19:00
U-Residence Vub, Generaal Jacqueslaan 271, 1050 Brussel

More than 68.5 million people are currently displaced by conflict or crises. Approximately 25 percent of them are women and adolescent girls of reproductive age. Humanitarian crises result in enormous risks to women and girls, including rape, assault, intimate partner violence, early and forced marriage, and trafficking. Access to sexual and reproductive health services is a critical and life-saving component of humanitarian response, yet the full range of these services may be unavailable or severely limited. This lecture will describe steps the international community has taken over the past 30 years to protect displaced women and girls, including improved access to reproductive health from the early days of an emergency, and will examine key strategies for moving forward.

In this Kapuscinski Development Lecture, Sarah Costa, the Executive Director of the Women’s Refugee Commission, will talk about “Gender Equality and Reproductive Health in a Changing Humanitarian Context”. The Women’s Refugee Commission is a research and advocacy organisation working to improve the lives and protect the rights of women, children and youth displaced by conflict and crisis. The WRC researches their needs, identifies solutions and advocates for programs and policies to strengthen their resilience and drive change in humanitarian practice.

This Kapuscinski Development Lecture is organised by Universitair Centrum voor Ontwikkelingssamenwerking — UCOS, the University Centre for Development Cooperation. The lecture will be the launch of a year-long focus on “Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights in Refugee Settings” of its project CHanGE (Campaign on sexual Health and Gender Equality).

During her tenure as professor of women’s health at the National School of Public Health, Brazil, Sarah was active in the national women’s movement, serving as a member of the Advisory Committee to the National Council on Women’s Rights.
