Social Security Reforms and European Integration:
Squaring the Circle?

Tuesday, 26 February 2019, 18.30h
Permanent Representation of Austria to the EU
Avenue de Cortenbergh 30, 1040 Brussels

The responsibility for the organisation, definition and financing structure of the national social insurance and health systems lies with the Member States. Nevertheless, the European Union policies, especially in the field of economic governance through the European Semester, increasingly affect social security reform programs. How can we achieve a reasonable balance between necessary economic governance and delivering on the European Pillar of Social Rights while fully respecting national traditions and competences? How much Europe is needed? And how important is “getting it right” for the future of European integration?

Günter DANNER
Deputy Director of the European Representation of German Social Insurance
