Last week, on the second night of Chanukah, Rudy Giuliani went on a tirade against philanthropist George Soros, repeating the common antisemitic conspiracy theory that leftist movements were controlled by Soros. But Giuliani went further, claiming that he is “more of a Jew than Soros” because Soros “doesn’t support Israel.”
That sums up one consequence of Trump’s newest weapon: charging Jews with antisemitism who express their criticism of the Israeli state, its occupation, and long history of dispossessing Palestinians. The other is truly alarming: this new Executive Order threatens to shut down Palestinian advocacy on campus, suppress free speech, and withdraw funding from Middle East Studies programs whose research and teaching fail to follow the official line of US foreign policy on Israel.
JVP was among the first groups to identify this grotesque tactic and to expose Trump’s hypocrisy. There’s just two days left for JVP to raise the funds to keep the pressure on, to sustain the fight for our right to speak up – oppose real antisemitism – and to advocate for Palestinian rights and freedoms.

In 2019, Trump:
- Accused Jews who vote Democrat of “great disloyalty”
- Told an audience at the Israeli American Council in Hollywood they have “no choice” but to vote for him because Democrats will take their wealth away
- Accused Representatives Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib as antisemitic to justify racist attacks against them
- Issued an Executive Order, under the guise of protecting Jewish students, that would silence students, especially Palestinian student groups, who are critical of Israel, making campuses less safe for them to express their views
In 2020 we have our work cut out for us on campuses, in the upcoming election, and in the media, and I believe that JVP will be one of the most critical organizations to support during this long struggle against Trump’s Executive Order and its punishment of advocacy for Palestine, free speech, and dissent.
