LETHAL PEACE: STUDENT POLITICAL PRISONERS IN COLOMBIA

On july the 4th, Intal-Ghent-Latin-America invites 2 speakers from the Colombian diaspora to talk about the Colombian peace process, political prisoners and the difficulties for civil society.

In 2016, a historic peace agreement should have entered into force between the Colombian government and the FARC. In exchange for, among other things, a large-scale land reform, the continent's oldest active guerrilla movement would lay down its arms.
However, after a campaign led by the right-wing extremist former president Uribe, the peace agreement was rejected. Since then, the violence has flared up more intensely than ever. Right-wing paramilitaries and the army are intimidating civil society with impunity. Dozens of human rights defenders are killed or imprisoned. Many have fled the country.

Within this context, we would like to highlight the remarkable case of 6 Colombian students, imprisoned on made up charges, because they took action against austerity measures in education.

Itayosara Rojas will give an introduction in to the peace process. She is a Colombian student, human rights activist and feminist.

Nicole Tinjaca will address the situation of political prisoners, with a focus on recently detained students. She is a Colombian activist whose partner was a political prisoner.

The event will start at 19h30 in vredeshuis.
