ETUI webinar - GDPR and privacy issues: the case of digital labour platforms and contact-tracing apps
15 July 2020, 14h-15h Brussels time

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which came into force in May 2018 is seen as the most comprehensible data protection legislation in the world. While the GDPR is a powerful tool that creates a broad array of new rights regarding personal data for all EU citizens it can also be used by trade unions at the workplace to improve the working conditions of workers. This ETUI webinar will look into the specific cases of how the GDPR legislation can be used to help address problems faced by workers in digital labour platforms such as non-payments for completed work and/or suspension of a worker account without explanation etc.

Another issue we will be looking in are the contact tracing apps that have been promoted recently as a very useful tool to return to normality after the first outbreak of the Covid pandemic. The huge problem with those apps is that they are too invasive into peoples' privacy. However, as we will hear at this ETUI webinar, this should not be the case if certain requirements are met which would make those apps both effective and protecting the users' privacy in general but also in the employment context.

  • Aida Ponce Del Castillo, ETUI,
  • Michael 'Six' Silberman, IG Metall
