Lecture : The War in Ukraine: NATO’s Role and Future Tasks 14 december, 2022 - 18:00

The war in Ukraine fundamentally challenges NATO’s East-West policy. NATO has moved the needle from partnership to defence and deterrence. But much work needs to be done. Russia’s aggression and seeming immunity to Western incentives seems to indicate that NATO must rely on defence more than deterrence. How can this be done, and beyond NATO’s force posture, what will it imply for NATO partnerships, including its future relationship to Ukraine, and its dialogue with Russia?

The lecture will consider these questions in light of lessons offered by NATO’s Harmel doctrine.

This public lecture by Sten Rynning of the Department of Political Science of the University of Southern Denmark forms the introduction to an international expert workshop on the topic of alliances and alignments in Europe and the Asia-Pacific in times of declining US power, a rising China and Russian aggression in Europe.

It will be followed by a panel debate with Ulrich Kühn (Institute for Peace Research and Security Policy, University of Hamburg) and Yoichiro Sato (College and Graduate School of Asia Pacific Studies, Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, Beppu), moderated by Elena Atanassova-Cornelis (Research Group International Politics, University of Antwerp).
