Migrant workers in Fortress Europe; Brussels, monday, 27 January 2020, 18h-20h

The European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) is pleased to invite you to a debate about ‘migrant workers in Fortress Europe’, the subject of the 20th edition of HesaMag, the ETUI’s health and safety magazine.

What is the reality of life and work in the European Union for the many people who have emigrated here from other countries and continents? How do the combined factors of poverty, a precarious legal status, increasing xenophobia and a hostile policy environment create an employment situation that for many non-European EU workers involves adverse working conditions, exploitation and discrimination in the labour market? And what can be done about it?

Our speakers will bring their perspectives from the trade union movement, civil society and academia to address these questions:

  • Laurent Vogel, ETUI senior researcher
  • Eva Maria Jiménez Lamas, Migrants CSC, Confederation of Christian Trade Unions
  • Mehdi Kassou, Citizen’s Platform for Refugee Support
  • Franca van Hooren, University of Amsterdam

Moderated by Mehmet Koksal and Bethany Staunton - ETUI

An apéro of drinks and light snacks will be served from 17.30 onwards.

Please note that the debate will take place in French and English.

We look forward to seeing you there.
