REPORT LAUNCH: FEMINIST MOVEMENTS AND CLIMATE JUSTICE IN MENA October 26th, 2022, 16:00–17:30 (UTC+03:00)

Feminist movements and women’s rights organizations are amongst the oldest, most developed, and well-organized movements in the MENA region. They have been accredited for social change and the promotion of gender justice despite enormous challenges. However, in a region that is characterized by inequality and hard-hit by climate change, disproportionally affecting vulnerable groups including women and girls, it is remarkable that demands for climate justice are not yet central to the current feminist priorities in MENA, where scattered efforts have yet to develop into feminist climate justice movement.

The purpose of this report is to provide knowledge around means and priorities to support feminist climate justice movement building in MENA. Findings are drawing on data from 22 in-depth interviews with feminist activists, women environmental activists, and international organizations; and a survey to which 140 feminist and women’s rights activists from across the region. The report highlights the intersections between climate change and gender justice in MENA, the current regional climate change activism trends shaping feminist movements’ agenda, the current interest in the feminism-climate nexus among activists and organizations, the identified challenges, gaps, needs and priorities. Finally, the report provides a set of recommendations on how international organizations and donors can better support the growth and strengthening of feminist climate justice movements in MENA.

During the panel discussion, we will be inviting panellists to reflect on the report’s key findings and recommendations, share their feminist demands for COP27 and asking how the international community can better support women’s engagement and participation in climate justice action.
