Thanks to your help, the EU has just published a new law that should considerably reduce the amount of palm oil we burn in our cars and, as a result, protect better the rainforests and their inhabitants.
With this new regulation palm oil biodiesel will not be considered 'sustainable' anymore and therefore will not qualify for subsidies anymore. This means palm oil in biodiesel should be eliminated by 2030 in Europe.
Even though there are some loopholes (palm grown on 'abandoned or severely degraded lands' will still be regarded as renewable), this is good news, especially because there will be a review of the law in 2021 with a possibility to include other crops (soja for instance) that also drive deforestation.
The next step is for this EU law to be implemented at national level, so be ready to take the fight to your country.
The fight is not over but we've made massive progress and we owe it to you. Eliminating nearly half of European consumption of palm oil will save a lot of forest and wildlife. Thank you so much!
Our very best wishes,
Nico, Luca, Pierre, Cristina and Zsigmond
