It's the first ruling against greenwashing in Italy's history
Last week oil giant Eni was fined 5 millions of euros for lying to consumers over its advertising campaign on 'green’ diesel.
Eni falsely claimed Eni Diesel+ was ‘green’ and had a positive impact on the environment. The Eni Diesel+ contains palm oil.
The complaint was lodged by Italy’s consumer organisation Movimento Difesa del Cittadino, environmental NGO Legambiente and Transport & Environment (T&E).
As a result, the energy company had to withdraw the advertising campaigns.
Biofuels are not green
The decision sends a clear message to fossil fuel companies trying to portray biofuels to politicians and the public as environmentally friendly and part of the solution to climate change.
