DECLARATION OF THE EUROPEAN INTERPARLIAMENTARY CONFERENCE OF SOLIDARITY WITH THE PEOPLE OF WESTERN SAHARA, WHICH, ON 12 DECEMBER 2020, INCLUDED 136 PARTICIPANTS.

The Assembly:

1 - Strongly condemns the violation of the 1991 ceasefire agreement by Morocco through its military intervention against Sahrawi civilians in the Guerguerat buffer zone on the southern international border of Western Sahara on 13th November 2020, and the subsequent repressive campaign against the Saharawi population in the occupied territories.

2- Condemns the unilateral declaration of Donald Trump on 10th December, which constitutes a serious violation of the Charter of the United Nations and of all international resolutions of both the United Nations and the African Union. Western Sahara is not for sale and cannot be the object of any haggling. This is a grave treason of both the Saharawi and the Palestinian people.

3. Recognizes that the decades-long conflict in Western Sahara and the failure of the United Nations to ensure respect for the rights of the Saharawi people, firstly with their right to self- determination, have led to a protracted status quo which has clearly favored the illegal occupier, Morocco. Calls upon the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, to break the inertia and act urgently to ensure respect for the inalienable rights of the Sahrawi people (UN General Assembly resolution 1514, 1960).

4 - Denounces the special responsibility of the European Union which, through illegal trade and fisheries agreements and through a complete disregard for the decisions of the Court of Justice of the EU, has strengthened the occupation and undermined the peace efforts of the United Nations.

5. Calls upon the EU, the Member States and the international community to finally act legally and to mobilize its collective strength in favor of the settlement of the conflict by the realization of the referendum on self-determination promised to the Saharawi people. Calls upon European states to act urgently to recognize the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, which is already a member of the African Union.

6 - Calls upon the United Nations Human Rights Council and the ICRC to act urgently for the release of all Sahrawi political prisoners.

7. Expresses its full solidarity with the Saharawi people at this time particularly stressful and reaffirms its absolute determination to act in favor of their freedom.
